This Sunday marks the 20th anniversary of TISWAS, a party I first attended at the tender age of 19. It was housed in the legendary CONEY ISLAND HIGH (R.I.P.) on Saint Mark’s Place. Every Thursday night I had something to look forward to. The music was British centric spanning from 60’s (The Kinks, Rolling Stones, Yardbirds) to what was current Britpop at the time (Blur, Suede, Pulp).
Well, as a self proclaimed Anglophile, I was in heaven.
Several years later, I joined the Tiswas party as the hostess and second DJ. I would say, that next to the MF party, it was at Tiswas where I learned how to DJ, move a crowd and honed my skills. It was my home away from home. Over the years many bands played, hundreds…but the most notable were The Strokes and Interpol, who were regulars at Tiswas. It was THE party to be at!
I’m proud to have been part of a piece of NY nightlife that inspired so many!
